Introduction
In accordance with STEP 1 of the Core Public Health Functions FY 2006 contract, a community health assessment of Daviess County has been performed and the top public health priorities have been identified. This assessment was conducted using data from the DHSS Community Data Profiles, MICA and various Data & Surveillance systems. Additional data for this assessment was gathered from www.answers.com, www.stats.indiana.edu, The United Health Foundation, the 2004 Missouri Kids Count Data Book and Health Politics: Power, Populism and Health by Mike Magee, MD.
The Daviess County Health Department has also participated in the North Central MO Regional Health Needs Assessment, a 9-County survey conducted by Truman State University. This Health Needs Assessment was completed in February 2006 and the lifestyle health risks and disease portions of the survey were used to see how the respondents’ perceptions correlated to the statistical data gathered from sources mentioned above. Of the 500 surveys sent out to Daviess County households only 96 (19.2%) were returned or about 1.17 percent of the county population. While this county data is interesting and will be useful for strategic planning in the future, the 9-County composite data is all that we can make statistical inferences from because of the larger number. In our case, the county data used for this Community Health Assessment (lifestyle risks and diseases) are in agreement with the 9-county data.
